Poetic Romance

The oil painting series of Dancers, Ladies, Ballet, Flora, along with BEI Jiaxiang’s ink wash Nudesweave together a romantic ode that bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics. Through flowing brushwork, hazy lighting, and expressive forms, BEI blends the intensity of Western oil painting with the ethereal spirit of Chinese literati art, constructing a gracefully profound universe of imagery.

BEI’s romanticism is rooted in an intuitive expression of life’s passion. The fluttering skirts of ballerinas, the sway of ladies’ qipaos, the blooming moment of flowers—each is transformed into a rhythmic celebration of liner expression. He possesses a deep understanding of the “unfinished” wisdom of the East—deliberately preserving blank spaces and fragmented forms in his compositions: the hazy faces of ladies, the blurred edges of petals, the dissipating points of dancers’ toes—building aesthetic space for “implication beyond depiction,” creating a contemplative blank space that resonates with Chinese painting’s philosophy.

The Flora series exemplifies this aesthetic most vividly: the crimson roses mingling with dark green backgrounds, their splattered pigments like torrential rain—evoking a yearning for life, reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Irises, and echoing the unrestrained boldness of XV Wei’s large-scale freehand flower paintings. In BEI’s ink wash Nude series, human forms intertwine with abstract color splashes on xuan paper, blending meticulous craftsmanship with wild expression—akin to Duchamp’s ready-mades works, yet replaced his concept subversion by Eastern metaphor.

BEI Jiaxiang’s romanticism ultimately resides in the poetic liberation of the soul. While the era of information chases technological precision, he adheres to the instinct that “emotions are in flux, images are alive and transforming.” The spin of dancers, the languor of ladies, the blooming and withering of flowers, the drifting mists of the human form—these are not mere visual replicas but ferry the viewer on a boat of canvas, gliding toward an aesthetic realm. In that liminal space, Eastern poetic blank and Western luminosity ultimately reach an eternal harmony amidst poetic chaos.
